– Sergey Vorontsov – Associate – Russia

– Angela Ganter – Associate – Germany

2 – A VENIR & INFORMATIONS / PROSSIME INIZIATIVE & INFORMAZIONI / FORTHCOMING & INFORMATION

The site of “Ciceroniana Online” (http://www.ojs.unito.it/index.php/COL/index), which has been in operation since December 2015, contains pdfs of all issues of the paper journal “Ciceroniana” (1959-2009) and now has public, automated statistics (visits and downloads are monitored: see further http://www.ojs.unito.it/index.php/COL/about/editorialPolicies#custom-0).  We were very pleased to note that in 2016—the first year in which previous issues were available–there were nearly 17500 downloads (almost 50 a day!).  In the first six months of 2017 there were nearly 9000 downloads, showing the persistent interest in the journal following the launch of the first issue “Ciceroniana On Line” in May 2017.  We feel that this is an incredible result in a research field as established and professional as Cicero studies.  Credit goes to the high level of contributions published for 50 years in “Ciceroniana”, but the work of the academic council and editorial staff of COL from 2013 has also been fundamental.  The positive response from scholars and interested readers offers an excellent springboard for the next issues of the revived “Ciceroniana On Line”.

In the next few days, SIAC members, up to date with the annual fee payment, will receive the full PDF of the first volume of “Ciceroniana on line” (n.s. 1, 1, 2017). The full version is not available on the journal’s website, where only individual contributions can be downloaded free of charge (http://www.ojs.unito.it/index.php/COL). Those wishing to receive the next issue of the journal and support SIAC initiatives are encouraged to renew their membership (http://tulliana.eu/leggi.php?LANG=E&TIPO=MEM&id=).

IV. VARIA

1 – A VENIR & INFORMATIONS / PROSSIME INIZIATIVE & INFORMAZIONI / FORTHCOMING & INFORMATION

Polis Announcement. Since 1978 Polis: the Journal for Ancient Greek Political Thought has published ground-breaking scholarship on the classical Greek political thought and its later reception. The journal’s Editor and Associate Editors would like to make several announcements to the community of scholars about the growth of our journal. Our first announcement is that beginning in 2018, Brill will increase the frequency of Polis from two issues to three issues annually. Second, the editorial staff of the journal would like to announce that Polis will broaden its research domain to include articles on all aspects of Hellenistic and Roman political thought and their subsequent reception. Third, in conjunction with these historic developments, the editorial board is proud to announce the addition of three new scholars who have accepted positions as Associate Editors. Carol Atack (University of Oxford), will oversee submissions on Greek political thought, Benjamin Gray (Birkbeck, University of London, and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin), will oversee submissions on Hellenistic political thought, and Daniel Kapust (University of Wisconsin-Madison), will oversee submissions on Roman political thought. The editorial board looks forward to publishing ground-breaking scholarship and book reviews not only on the polis, which gave birth to concepts such as democracy and tyranny, but also on the civitas, which both developed and offered novel alternatives of political organization to the polis. The scholarly field of Greek and Roman political thought has reached a level of sophistication and academic seriousness that calls for a journal commensurate with the academic promise of that field’s scholars. Polis takes these major editorial steps in order that it become the preeminent source of publication for this exciting and growing research domain. LINK

– A joint symposium of the ‘Euro-Linguistischer Arbeitskreis Mannheim’ and of the scholars  who identify with the aims of ‘2.000. The European Journal’ will be held at Roma Tre University on Wednesday 27 September 2017, and on Thursday 28 September at the Palazzo Comunale in Arpino. The themes of the symposium are: 1) Theodor Mommsen and Cicero. For Theodor Mommsen’s (1817-2017) bicentenary. 2) Genesis and Migration of Indo-European Languages- Research and theories on their origin. 3) The European society. History of an idea. Those who would like to take part should send an abstract of their papers, along with a short c.v., to Matthew Fox for Ciceronianism, to P. Sture Ureland for Eurolinguistics, to Vincenzo Merolle for European Studies, along with a short c.v., by the end of June. This will be the second of a number of symposia, to be held in the coming years, in Rome or at other European universities. The underlying idea from a philological point of view is that of analyzing the current development of European languages and of selecting a common vocabulary for Europe and the West. From a philosophical point of view, it will be that of promoting the ideas of tolerance and civilization proper to Western democracies. Therefore, we invite submission of papers and participation on the part of colleagues who, we are sure, will appreciate our efforts towards the advancement of learning. Unfortunately, no financial assistance will be available. Please, get in touch at the email address: Cicero_Euro_Linguistics@fastwebnet.it.
