Premier des textes cicéroniens conservés, le De inventione souffre encore trop souvent d’une réception figée qui fait exclusivement de lui un simple objet didactique, un manuel se contentant de reproduire une doctrine rhétorique dont le seul mérite serait d’être plus accessible et plus systématique que celle du De oratore. La faute principale pourrait en revenir à Cicéron lui-même qui, dans ce même De oratore, décrivait les deux livres de son premier écrit comme quae pueris aut adulescentulis nobis ex commentariolis nostris incohata ac rudia exciderunt (De orat. 1.5). Dès lors, l’Antiquité tardive pouvait bien faire du De inventione l’un des piliers de l’enseignement rhétorique, très largement diffusé et commenté dans ses moindres détails, l’avenir moderne du texte était scellé : il serait une simple source où puiser pour reconstruire, par comparaison à la Rhétorique à Herennius, l’état le plus ancien dans la doctrine latine de l’argumentation.
Rédigé entre 86 et 84 a.C., le De inuentione représente pourtant un témoin clé de la pensée cicéronienne et de son évolution : mobilisant des concepts originaux, abordant la pratique du discours sous un angle philosophique qui contraste nettement avec l’approche de l’Auctor de laRhétorique à Herennius, exploitant des notions juridiques de façon très structurée, leDe inventione offre au lecteur attentif bien plus qu’une compilation de règles didactiques : un système en devenir, situé au confluent de la philosophie, du droit et de la rhétorique, produit à un moment clé de la formation de Cicéron.
C’est donc pour sa valeur fondatrice que la Société Internationale des Amis de Cicéron (SIAC) a choisi ce texte afin d’inaugurer la nouvelle série de colloques qu’elle met en place à partir de 2024 : les Lecturae Ciceronis. L’objectif de ces Lecturae est de rassembler des chercheuses et des chercheurs non sur un thème cicéronien mais sur une œuvre cicéronienne pour en proposer la lecture la plus approfondie possible, en croisant des approches et des méthodes diverses : histoire du texte, étude des sources, étude du contexte, lecture analytique au plus près du texte, analyses lexicales ou synthèses théoriques. L’enjeu premier des Lecturae est d’offrir pour l’œuvre considérée à la fois un état de l’art et des pistes permettant une approche renouvelée, dégagée des a priori et redonnant aux textes ses différents niveaux de sens. Après passage devant le comité de lecture, les textes présentés à l’occasion de ces Lecturae Ciceronis pourront être publiés dans le numéro 2024, VIII, 2 de Ciceroniana on Line, entièrement consacré au De inventione et à paraître en décembre 2024.
Pour cette première Lectura Ciceronis, qui se tiendra les 21 et 22 mars 2024 à Sorbonne Université (Paris), le comité scientifique accepte toutes les propositions d’intervention consacrées au De inventione dans les domaines évoqués ci-dessus, et plus particulièrement sur l’histoire du texte, la constitution de la doctrine rhétorique, la présence du droit et l’utilisation de la philosophie. Les interventions pourront consister en des lectures analytiques de passages représentatifs du texte ou en des présentations synthétiques plus générales. Les propositions de communications d’une page maximum doivent être adressées, accompagnées d’un bref CV, au comité scientifique par le biais du site https://deinventione.sciencesconf.org/ avant le 31 août 2023.
Important : s’ils souhaitent pouvoir participer à la publication issue du colloque, les intervenants retenus devront être en mesure de remettre leur article rédigé selon les normes de la revue COL au plus tard le 15 juin 2024.

Primo dei testi ciceroniani ad essere conservato, il De inventione soffre ancora troppo spesso di una ricezione fissa che lo rende esclusivamente un semplice oggetto didattico, un manuale, che si accontenta di riprodurre una dottrina retorica e il cui unico merito è quello di essere più accessibile e più sistematico di quello del De oratore. La colpa principale potrebbe essere di Cicerone stesso che, proprio nel De oratore, descrive i due libri del suo primo scritto come quae pueris aut adulescentulis nobis ex commentariolis nostris incohata ac rudia exciderunt (De orat. 1.5). Da quando la tarda antichità fece del De inventione uno dei pilastri dell’insegnamento retorico, molto diffuso e commentato nei suoi minimi dettagli, il futuro del testo in epoca moderna era segnato: sarebbe stato una semplice fonte, da cui ricostruire, attraverso il confronto con la Retorica a Erennio, lo stato più antico della dottrina latina dell’argomentazione.
Scritto tra l’86 e l’84 a.C, il De inuentione è tuttavia una testimonianza chiave del pensiero di Cicerone e della sua evoluzione: proponendo concetti originali, affrontando la pratica del discorso da un’angolazione filosofica che contrasta nettamente con l’approccio dell’Auctor della Rhetorica ad Herennium, sfruttando le nozioni giuridiche in modo altamente strutturato, il De inventione offre al lettore attento molto più di una raccolta di regole didattiche: un sistema in divenire, situato alla confluenza di filosofia, diritto e retorica, prodotto in un momento chiave della formazione di Cicerone.
È dunque per il suo valore fondante che la Società Internazionale degli Amici di Cicerone (SIAC) ha scelto questo testo per inaugurare la nuova serie di colloqui che istituirà a partire dal 2024: le Lecturae Ciceronis. L’obiettivo di queste Lecturae è quello di riunire gli studiosi non su un tema ciceroniano, ma su un’opera ciceroniana, per proporre una lettura il più possibile approfondita, incrociando diversi approcci e metodi: storia del testo, studio delle fonti, studio del contesto, lettura analitica il più possibile vicina al testo, analisi lessicali o sintesi teoriche. L’obiettivo primario delle Lecturae è quello di offrire sia lo stato dell’arte sia le possibilità di un approccio rinnovato all’opera in questione, libero da preconcetti e che restituisca i diversi livelli di significato dei testi. Dopo essere passati al vaglio del comitato di lettura, i testi presentati in occasione di queste Lecturae Ciceronis potranno essere pubblicati nel numero 2024, VIII, 2 di Ciceroniana on Line, interamente dedicato al De inventione e in uscita nel dicembre 2024.
Per questa prima Lectura Ciceronis, che si terrà il 21 e 22 marzo 2024 presso la Sorbona (Parigi), il comitato scientifico accoglie tutte le proposte di relazioni dedicate al De inventione negli ambiti sopra menzionati, e più in particolare sulla storia del testo, la costituzione della dottrina retorica, la presenza del diritto e l’uso della filosofia. Gli interventi possono consistere in letture analitiche di passi rappresentativi del testo o in presentazioni sintetiche più generali.
Le proposte di relazioni, di una pagina al massimo, devono essere inviate, insieme con un breve CV, al comitato scientifico tramite il sito web https://deinventione.sciencesconf.org/ entro il 31 agosto 2023.
Importante: se desiderano partecipare alla pubblicazione risultante dalla conferenza, i relatori selezionati devono essere in grado di presentare il loro articolo scritto secondo gli standard della rivista COL entro il 15 giugno 2024.

As the first of Cicero’s texts to be preserved, De inventione still suffers too often from a rigid reception which makes it a mere didactic object, a handbook that merely reproduces a rhetorical doctrine whose only merit is that it is more accessible and systematic than that of De oratore. The main fault could lie with Cicero himself, who in the same De oratore described the two books of his first writing as quae pueris aut adulescentulis nobis ex commentariolis nostris incohata ac rudia exciderunt (De orat. 1.5). From then on, late Antiquity may well have made De inventione one of the pillars of rhetorical teaching, widely disseminated and commented on down to the smallest detail, but the text’s modern destiny was sealed: it would simply be a source for reconstructing, by comparison with the Rhetorica in Herennium, the earliest state of the Latin doctrine of argumentation.
Written between 86 and 84 a.C., De inuentione is nevertheless a key witness to Ciceronian thought and its evolution: mobilizing original concepts, approaching the practice of discourse from a philosophical angle that contrasts sharply with the Auctor‘s approach in Rhetorica ad Herennium, exploiting legal notions in a highly structured way, De inventione offers the attentive reader far more than a compilation of didactic rules: a system in the making, located at the confluence of philosophy, law and rhetoric, produced at a key moment in Cicero’s training.
The Société Internationale des Amis de Cicéron (SIAC) has chosen this text to inaugurate its new series of colloquia starting in 2024: the Lecturae Ciceronis. The aim of these Lecturae is to bring together researchers not on a Ciceronian topic, but on a Ciceronian work in order to offer the most in-depth reading possible, combining a variety of approaches and methods: history of the text, study of sources, study of context, close-up analytical reading of the text, lexical analyses or theoretical syntheses. The primary aim of the Lecturae is to offer both a state-of-the-art analysis of the work in question, as well as avenues for a fresh approach, free from preconceptions and restoring the texts’ various levels of meaning. Once they have passed through the reading committee, the texts presented at these Lecturae Ciceronis may be published in issue 2024, VIII, 2 of Ciceroniana on Line, entirely devoted to De inventione and due for publication in December 2024.
For this first Lectura Ciceronis, to be held on March 21 and 22, 2024 at Sorbonne Université (Paris), the scientific committee welcomes all proposals for papers on De inventione in the above- mentioned fields, and in particular on the history of the text, the constitution of rhetorical doctrine, the presence of law and the use of philosophy. Papers may consist of analytical readings of key passages from the text, or of synthetic presentations.
Proposals for papers of no more than one page should be sent, together with a brief CV, to the scientific committee via https://deinventione.sciencesconf.org/ by August 31, 2023.
Important: if they wish to take part in the publication resulting from the symposium, selected speakers must be able to submit their article, written according to COL standards, by June 15, 2024 at the latest.

PRESENTAZIONE
CLASSICAMENTE Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico (VI edizione)
Le giovani ricercatrici e i giovani ricercatori, le dottorande e i dottorandi del curriculum di Antropologia del mondo antico del dottorato in Scienze dell’Antichità e Archeologia promuovono la sesta edizione del ciclo di seminari Classicamente. Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico. Dopo i riscontri positivi della quinta edizione, gli incontri che si svolgeranno nell’A.A. 2023/2024 saranno nuovamente incentrati sulle molteplici metodologie e prospettive di ricerca che caratterizzano l’antropologia del mondo antico sin dalla nascita di questa disciplina (con i lavori di Gernet, Vernant, Detienne) e sugli approcci innovativi che invece contribuiscono costantemente all’ampliamento di questo ambito di studi. La sesta edizione ambisce a fornire un punto di contatto tra lo studio del mondo antico e la sua ricezione nelle società contemporanee, soffermandosi sugli aspetti culturali, sociali e ideologici scaturiti da questo contatto.
Il ciclo sarà organizzato in incontri che avranno come fulcro le seguenti tematiche:
1) Nuove prospettive sulla decolonizzazione dei classici (21-22 novembre 2023)
Da alcuni anni, negli ambienti accademici anglofoni di Antichistica si è imposta la necessità di discutere dell’impatto sociale che le discipline classiche hanno avuto nei secoli passati e hanno ancora in quanto elemento strutturale dei sistemi educativi nei paesi occidentali. Gli interventi di Dan-el- Padilla Peralta e la proposta di abolire il curriculum di Classics all’università di Howard (Washington D.C.) hanno posto il problema dell’esclusività dell’accesso a questo tipo di studi e del loro contributo alla costituzione di una narrazione storica legata alla supremazia dell’Occidente. In ambito europeo, questo dibattito è stato recepito in maniera diversificata e ha suscitato sia reazioni di difesa acritica delle discipline in questione sia proposte costruttive per il loro rinnovamento. Come giovani studiose e studiosi del mondo antico sentiamo la responsabilità di portare questi temi al centro delle nostre ricerche e dei nostri dibattiti comuni e di contestualizzarli nell’ambiente culturale italiano. A tal proposito, invitiamo a proporre
1. contributi metodologici e di storia degli studi, che presentino problemi di natura teorica legati a tale dibattito (i.e. modelli ermeneutici di lettura delle fonti antiche, vedi anche casi di appropriazione storica dei classici come strumento di legittimazione politica)
2. casi studio che dimostrino come l’applicazione di un nuovo approccio allo studio dei classici (i.e. uso della comparazione etnografica) possa contribuire a un’interpretazione emica attenta ai modelli di pensiero delle società antiche.
2) Discorsi e pratiche del sacro (14-15 dicembre 2023)
L’intenzione di questa sezione è di prediligere tematiche e metodi che mettano in prospettiva comparativa discorsi e pratiche del sacro concernenti in particolare il mondo greco e romano, ma che prendano in considerazione anche l’antico Egitto, il Vicino Oriente, i monoteismi (Cristianesimo, Giudaismo, Islam) e altri sistemi religiosi delle culture contemporanee.
Tale comparazione potrà declinarsi secondo tre livelli:
1. le modalità con le quali gli antichi stessi comparavano e percepivano le proprie differenze e particolarità religiose rispetto a un’altra cultura e in cui potevano esplorare la propria identità religiosa attraverso questo confronto con l’altro;
2. la possibilità di rintracciare influenze, prestiti, reinterpretazioni, somiglianze o profonde differenze (in termini linguistici, figurativi, di costruzione mitica, etc.) tra i “linguaggi” religiosi che si sono incontrati nell’antichità;
3. la misura in cui le pratiche cultuali all’opera nelle religioni contemporanee possono essere comparate a quelle in atto nelle società antiche.
In questa prospettiva, si accettano contributi che affrontino in modo precipuo ma non esclusivo tali tematiche: la costruzione del divino (nominazione divina, racconti teogonici e rapporti tra divinità, forme di rappresentazione iconografica, declinazione topografica e narrativa del divino), la ritualità e i suoi spazi, l’esperienza religiosa, la riflessione sul divino, l’alterità e l’accesso alla vita religiosa.
3) Difetti di comunicazione (18-19 gennaio 2024)
Come afferma Erodoto (III 38.1-2), solo chi è pazzo potrebbe deridere le usanze altrui; tuttavia, costruire le basi per una comunicazione efficace – soprattutto qualora siano coinvolte culture, tradizioni o regni naturali differenti – non è sempre un’operazione facile. Se ogni comunicazione con l’altro non fosse che un malinteso? Questa è la tesi che sostengono Christine e Véronique Servais, ad esempio, a proposito della comunicazione tra umano e animale («Le malentendu comme structure de la communication», Questions de communication, 15, 1, 2009, pp. 21-49). Il malinteso va qui interpretato in senso euristico, come una struttura di comunicazione in grado di farsi carico dell’alterità dell’interlocutore, in cui non c’è un messaggio preciso da trasmettere a un animale che recepisce, sotto l’unico controllo dell’umano che lo emette: al contrario, tutti i significati si plasmano ad opera di entrambi, nel corso dell’interazione. La proiezione dei propri valori in contesti lontani – in altre parole, la tendenza ad assumere uno sguardo etico, senza riconoscere e valorizzare l’alterità – può condurre, inoltre, ad una rappresentazione fantasiosa, a volte grottesca, di realtà sconosciute o con le quali l’incontro è mediato da contingenze obbligate (guerre, esplorazioni, commerci o interazioni con il mondo animale). A volte, però, la distanza tra culture o mondi naturali viene annullata grazie ad azioni concrete che possono prescindere dalla comunicazione verbale in senso stretto. All’interno di questa sezione si intendono prendere in esame casi e forme di queste particolari situazioni comunicative che ci provengono dal mondo antico, non però limitato all’area geografica greca e romana. Si propone di esplorare le seguenti aree tematiche, da ritenersi comunque non esclusive:
1. Aneddotica paradossografica come strumento privilegiato di descrizione di culture lontane. Si vorrebbe concentrare l’attenzione sui meccanismi antropologici peculiari della geografia del meraviglioso, come l’inversione dei valori che spesso caratterizza le descrizioni di popoli lontani, o le immagini, talvolta fantasiose o stereotipate, impiegate per costruire e definire l’altro da sé.
2. Modalità alternative di dialogo e contatto tra culture nella sfera economica, con particolare riferimento al cosiddetto silent trade, forma peculiare di comunicazione non verbale e “silenziosa”, possibile grazie alla condivisione di una comune logica del commercio.
3. Episodi presenti nella letteratura greca e latina ove si verificano delle discrasie culturali nel rapporto fra singoli o nell’interazione fra comunità, in ambito pacifico o bellico. Ossia quando due o più personaggi, interagendo secondo i rispettivi parametri della società di provenienza, creano un gap comunicativo con l’interlocutore; l’analisi di questo divario permette non solo di analizzare le istanze culturali delle parti ma anche le motivazioni che hanno creato l’incomprensione.
4. Casi ed episodi di interazione tra umani e altri animali, in ogni contesto (relazioni tra umani e pets, incontri fortuiti con animali selvatici, apostrofi, nomi propri e altre forme di comunicazione tra umani e animali domestici, d’allevamento, da guerra, ecc.) che facciano emergere le diverse espressioni dell’atto comunicativo, pur con “interlocutori” che non possono rispondere a parole.
4) La scrittura efficace: performatività e agency della parola scritta (7-8 marzo 2024)
Il problema della relazione tra oralità e scrittura è uno degli esempi più significativi di intersezione tra studi sul mondo antico e antropologia culturale. Da questo incontro è emerso il contributo della scrittura alla registrazione di informazioni e alla compilazione di documenti pubblici e privati così come la sua capacità di modificare le abitudini cognitive dei propri utenti. A questi aspetti funzionali si affiancano un’agency e una performatività che possono essere esplorate attraverso approcci di tipo pragmatico.
Il panel si propone di trattare questi aspetti performativi e non informativi dell’utilizzo della tecnica della scrittura, al fine di collocare tale pratica culturale nel dominio delle interazioni comunicative dirette, e non soltanto tra le forme espressive il cui messaggio è mediato da una distanza spaziale e temporale.
Invitiamo a presentare contributi relativi al mondo antico greco e romano, ma anche al Vicino Oriente e all’Egitto antico, così come contributi metodologici di antropologia culturale e antropologia storica, che possano favorire la costruzione di un dialogo interdisciplinare in chiave comparativa sul tema della scrittura. Saranno accettati interventi sui seguenti temi:
1) l’impiego di diversi supporti materiali in relazione a diversi significati del messaggio scritto. 2) l’importanza della comunicazione scritta nelle dinamiche di tipo cultuale/ in contesto rituale. 3) il rapporto tra il valore performativo della comunicazione scritta e il layout dei testi.
TEMPI E LUOGHI
Questa sesta edizione si terrà in presenza presso le strutture del Dipartimento DFCLAM (Filologia e Critica delle Letterature Antiche e Moderne) dell’Università di Siena. Per i relatori, non sarà prevista la possibilità di intervenire da remoto.
Di norma, i singoli incontri sono soliti svolgersi in una o due giornate. I lavori sono aperti da una studiosa o uno studioso di rilievo che si occupa della problematica su cui è incentrato il singolo seminario, per poi lasciare la parola alle relatrici e ai relatori che sono stati selezionati. Dopo ciascuna relazione, ampio spazio è lasciato alle domande del pubblico e al dibattito.
MODALITÀ DI PARTECIPAZIONE
La presente Call for Papers è rivolta a giovani studiose o studiosi appartenenti alle seguenti categorie: laureate e laureati magistrali, dottorande e dottorandi e dottoresse e dottori di ricerca, post-doc, assegniste e assegniste di ricerca, studiose o studiosi indipendenti senza alcun legame con istituzioni accademiche che, in ogni caso, abbiano conseguito il Dottorato di Ricerca da non più di 5 anni al momento della scadenza della presente Call. Gli interessati sono invitati a presentare un abstract di massimo 500 parole, corredato da una bibliografia essenziale, che dovrà essere inviato in formato .pdf entro le ore 24:00 del 31/07/2023. Per garantire l’anonimato della selezione, nel file .pdf non dovrà essere presente alcun dato personale o di riconoscimento.
In un file separato (in formato .pdf) dovranno invece essere indicati con precisione il proprio nome e cognome, il titolo dell’intervento, la propria affiliazione attuale e un breve CV accademico, con indicati titoli di studio, esperienze formative ed eventuali pubblicazioni.
Gli abstract potranno essere presentati nelle seguenti lingue: italiano, inglese, francese. Nel caso di interventi in lingua non italiana, si richiederà di presentare un testo scritto che possa facilitare l’attenzione del pubblico.
Per le laureate ed i laureati magistrali è obbligatorio anche l’invio di una lettera di presentazione firmata da un docente universitario. Gradita è la presentazione di panel di due o più interventi, preferibilmente rappresentativi di differenti prospettive di ricerca così da implementare la dimensione dialogica degli incontri. In caso di presentazione in panel, è richiesta altresì una breve presentazione dello stesso (200/250 parole), in cui venga evidenziata la ratio che ne è alla base. Esclusivamente le autrici e gli autori che desiderassero proporre un panel di due o più interventi sono invitati a inviare gli abstract, i CV e la presentazione del panel alla mail dialoghisenesi@gmail.com, con il seguente oggetto: Proposta di panel Dialoghi Senesi VI edizione. Nel corpo della mail devono essere altresì indicati con chiarezza nome, cognome e affiliazione di ognuno delle o dei partecipanti al panel, più i titoli degli interventi stessi e il titolo del panel.
Le autrici e gli autori dei contributi selezionati saranno contattati entro il 15/09/2023 al fine di organizzare con largo anticipo la struttura e la distribuzione dei seminari durante l’anno accademico.

INTRODUCTION
CLASSICAMENTE Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico (VI series)
The PhD alumni and students of the Anthropology of the Ancient World curriculum of the PhD course in Classics and Archaeology would like to promote a sixth cycle of seminars of the series Classicamente. Dialoghi senesi sul mondo antico. Following the positive outcome of the fifth series, the sessions which will take place in the 2023/2024 academic year shall continue focusing on the different methodologies and research perspectives which have shaped anthropology of the ancient world as a field of study ever since its first development (with the works of Gernet, Vernant and Detienne). Space will also be given to those innovative approaches that constantly contribute to the hermeneutical expansion of this particular field of study. This year’s series of seminars wishes to create a meeting point for scholarship on antiquity and contemporary debate on its reception in modern societies, underlining the cultural, social and ideological aspects which spark from the interaction between present and past.
The cycle will be structured in sessions regarding the following topics:
1) New perspectives on the decolonisation of classics (21-22 November 2023)
In recent years, Anglo-American academia has been faced with the challenge of discussing the social impact of Classics – seen as a structural element of the educational systems of the Global North – in modern and contemporary society. The public speeches of Dan-el-Padilla Peralta and the motion to abolish the Classics curriculum at Howard University (Washington D.C.) have raised the issue of the exclusive access to this type of studies and of their role in the making of a historical narrative deeply connected to Western hegemony. In European academia, the debate has found a varied reception and has given way both to reactions of acritical defence of classical studies and to constructive suggestions as to how they could (or should) be renovated. As young scholars of Antiquity, we believe we should contribute to the discussion and contextualise it within the Italian cultural horizon. Thus, we encourage papers on the following aspects:
1. Papers dealing with methodological issues and with the history of classical studies, presenting theoretical issues connected to the ongoing debate (i.e., hermeneutical tools used to read ancient sources, the appropriation of classics as a resource for political entitlement, etc.);
2. Case studies demonstrating how by applying new perspectives to Classics (i.e., the use of comparative ethnography) one may contribute to the establishment of an emic interpretation of ancient societies and their mental patterns.
2) Religious discourse and practice (14-15 December 2023)
The goal of this session will be to focus on issues and methods which allow for a comparatist perspective of religious discourses and practices specifically regarding the Greek and Roman world, but possibly also taking into account ancient Egypt, the Near and Middle East, monotheistic religions (Judaism, Christianism and Islam) and other religious systems belonging to contemporary culture.
Such forms of comparisons may operate on three distinguished levels:
1. The ways in which ancient societies perceived and analysed their religious differences and peculiarities through comparison with other cultures and how they thus explored their own religious identity through contrast;
2. The opportunity for modern scholars to trace influences, exchanges, reinterpretations, analogies and deep differences (in linguistic, figurative or mythical terms) between the various religious “languages” of Antiquity;
3. The extent by which cult practices operating in contemporary religions may or may not be compared to those employed by ancient societies.
In this perspective, we welcome papers dealing with the following topics: the construction of deity (divine naming, theogonies and tales on the relationships amongst deities, forms of iconographic representation, topographic and narrative embodiment of divineness), ritual practice and its spaces, religious experience, speculation on deity, otherness and access to religious life.
3) Flaws of communication (18-19 January 2024)
As claimed by Herodotus (III 38. 1-2), only a fool would mock the customs of others; nevertheless, building the basis for efficient communication – especially when different civilisations, traditions or natural kingdoms are involved – is not always an easy task. What if all communication with the Other were to be seen as a form of misunderstanding? This is the thesis discussed by Christine and Véronique Servais as regards communication between human and non-human animals («Le malentendu comme structure de la communication», Questions de communication, 15, 1, 2009, pp. 21-49). Misunderstanding should here be understood as a heuristic tool, a communication structure capable of taking on the otherness of the agents of the communication act, in which there is no specific message to convey to a non-human receiver uniquely under the control of the human utterance. Quite on the contrary, all of the possible meanings are moulded by both participants of the speech act. The projection of one’s values in remote contexts – put simply, the tendency to adopt an etic perspective, disconfirming and de-valuing alterity – may lead to a fantasised, if not grotesque, representation of realities which are either unknown or mediated by enforced contingency (war, exploration, trade or interaction with the non-human animal world). Sometimes, however, the distance between civilisations or natural kingdoms can be annulled by pragmatic actions capable of going beyond strictly verbal communication. In this session, we intend to scrutinise recorded cases of these peculiar communicative situations from Antiquity, broadening our horizon of research beyond the Greek and Roman world. We would therefore suggest the submission of papers analysing the following topics:
1. Paradoxography as a privileged narrative tool employed to describe distant cultures. We would like to focus on the anthropological mechanisms underlying the geography of wonder, such as the inversion of values often employed to describe remote societies or the images, often fantastical and stereotyped, employed to construe and define the ‘Other’;
2. Alternative means of dialogue and contact between cultures as regards the economy of ancient societies, with particular reference to the so-called silent trade, a specific form of non-verbal “silent” communication made possible by a shared trade logic;
3. Episodes taken from Greek and Latin literature in which cultural discrepancies between individuals or communities occur, both in times of war and in times of peace. Indeed, when two or more characters interact with each other according to the respective norms of their societies of origin, they create a communicative gap: the analysis of this gap allows for the observation of the cultural instances of the agents and of the reasons behind the misunderstanding;
4. Cases and episodes of interaction between human and non-human animals, in any context (relationships with pets, casual encounters with wild non-human animals, forms of address used by humans for non-human domestic, labour, or war animals), which showcase the varied forms of expressions exploited in the speech act, be it with “speakers” who cannot reply using words.
4) Effective writing: performativity and agency of the written word (7-8 March 2024)
The issue regarding the relationship between written text and orality is one of the most significant examples of the interaction between scholarship on Antiquity and Cultural Anthropology. From such interaction, it has become possible to appreciate the role played by writing in the recording of information and the production of public and private documents, underlining the way written text can modify the cognitive processes of those who employ it. Alongside these functional aspects of writing, one can also consider the agency and the performative aspect of writing which one can explore through pragmatical approaches.
This session wishes to deal with the performative aspects of the use of writing rather than with its informative aspects, so as to place this cultural practice amongst the direct forms of communicative interactions, and not simply amongst the forms of expression in which the content is mediated by a spatial and temporal distance.
We therefore encourage the submission of papers regarding the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, but also the Near/Middle East and ancient Egypt. We also encourage papers dealing with methodological issues regarding both cultural and historical anthropology, hoping this may allow for an interdisciplinary comparatist dialogue on writing. We thus welcome papers on the following topics:
1. The use of different material media and their relevance as regards the content of the written text; 2. The importance of written communication in the dynamics of cult practices and ritual contexts; 3. The relationship between the performative aspect of written communication and textual layouts.
WHERE AND WHEN
The sixth series will be hosted in person by the DFCLAM Department (Filologia e Critica delle Letterature Antiche e Moderne) at the University of Siena. The possibility to participate as speakers via remote online access will not be available.
Usually, each session takes place across one or two days. Works are commenced by an established key-note speaker working on the issues discussed during the session: selected speakers will then, in turn, present their paper. After each presentation, ample time is given for questions from the audience and discussion.
SUBMISSION NORMS
This Call for Papers is for young scholars belonging to the following categories: MA graduates, PhD students and alumni, post-doc researchers, Early Career researchers, independent researchers who, in all cases, have obtained their PhD no earlier than 5 years prior to the submission deadline. Those interested are invited to present an abstract (500 words max.), followed by a selected bibliography, which should be sent as a .pdf file by 31/07/2023, 24:00. To guarantee anonymity in the selection of abstracts, the .pdf file must not contain any sort of personal information or means of recognition.
In a separate file (in .pdf), those submitting should include their name and surname, title of the submitted paper, academic affiliation and a brief academic CV stating qualifications, formative experiences and any relevant publication.
Abstracts may be submitted in the following languages: Italian, English, French. If submitting a paper in a language other than Italian, a written text of the presentation will be requested to facilitate the participation of the audience.
MA graduates wishing to submit their abstract must also include in their submission a reference letter from a university lecturer. We welcome the submission of panels with two or more presentations, preferably representing different research perspectives on a coherent topic so as to enhance the dialogic aspect of our sessions. If submitting a panel, a brief presentation (200/250 words max.) highlighting the reasons behind the panel must be included. Those wishing to submit a panel with two or more presentations are invited to send their abstracts, CVs and the panel presentation to the email address dialoghisenesi@gmail.com with the following subject: Proposta di panel Dialoghi Senesi VI edizione. Selected speakers will be contacted by 15/09/2023, so as to allow sufficient time for the organisation and distribution of the seminars throughout the academic year.

We are happy to be able to send you the call for papers for the fourth conference „The greate characters of the Roman world”, which will take place at Lublin, Poland, 14-15. 11. 2023. After Sulla, Marc Anthony and Spartacus now we have chosen Lucius Sergius Catilina as our leading theme and this year meeting is called L. Sergius Catilina – history and tradition. We invite both established and early career scholars. The proposals should focuse on the history of Catiline’s period, Catiline himself, his collaborators, friends and foes and the reception of him in the later epochs and cultures. The analysis of the inner Republican mechanis as exemplified in Catiline’s actions and reasons are also welcome. The organizers – the Ancient History Group of the Institute of History, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, Lublin, Poland, and the Polish Society of Ancient Studies – expect applications by September 4, 2023.
