Anne Raffarin littérature latine classique et humaniste (UPEC) 

Nathalie Gorochov histoire du Moyen Age (UPEC)

Conçue pour un public d’étudiants ou d’enseignants de toutes disciplines attirés par l’Antiquité et désireux de découvrir les littératures grecque et latine dans le contexte dans lequel elles se sont développées, cette université d’été d’une semaine offre un programme à la fois large et approfondi, ouvert sur les disciplines en lien avec la littérature : philosophie, histoire, anthropologie… Sur la base d’un vaste corpus de textes traduits, les enseignants proposeront cette année d’explorer la relation entre le maître et l’élève dans l’Antiquité, au Moyen Age et à la Renaissance, ainsi que les usages des modèles pédagogiques et des savoirs antiques. Une initiation ou un approfondissement en langue grecque et en langue latine seront également proposés en option afin de donner davantage de réalité à cette immersion dans les mondes anciens.

·      Michael C. Alexander, the author of Trials in the Late Roman Republic, 149 BC to 50 BC (TLRR), announces a search for a scholar to serve as editor for a second edition of this work, which was originally published in print in 1990, and posted digitally in 2007 (https://hdl.handle.net/10027/99 ).  The goals of this project are 1) to convert the work into a searchable database (this goal has already been mostly completed), and 2) to make corrections and additions to the original, taking into account scholarship published after the original publication, while adhering as much as possible to the format of the original. 

The editor will be authorized to make whatever changes she or he deems appropriate. The end product will be digital and, if the editor wishes, could also be in print. There will be no financial remuneration for the position of editor, and it is not expected that any royalties will result from either digital or print publication. However, because the editor will be the scholar in charge of the project, with control over scholarly decision-making, we hope that successful completion of the project will benefit the career of the editor, just as the publication of any scholarly book or article would. 

Applicants should be scholars working in a relevant field, such as Roman Republican History or Roman Law, and have experience using TLRR. A fluent command of in written English is required. Access to a library with a strong collection in relevant areas of scholarship will also be necessary. The software for the database has already been created by Dr. Michael Sperberg-McQueen, who is an internationally recognized expert in the field of digital text encoding (http://cmsmcq.com/ ). He will continue to work with the project, with Prof. Alexander serving as the data-entry person for the project. The project is projected to be completed within 18 to 24 months after the application deadline, depending in part on the editor’s other commitments. 

Anyone interested should contact Prof. Alexander (micalexa@uic.edu ) for more specific information about the background to this project, what it will involve, and the application process. Applications should be received by October 1, 2023. A potential editor may wish to suggest a second person to assist in the project; however, a group bigger than two is discouraged as potentially delaying completion of the project.
